Of Obesity In America
thirds of American citizens are either now overweight which is
a BMI (body mass index) of 25 plus or obese which is defined as
a BMI of 30 or higher. How did we come to this place where most
of our citizens are at risk for health issues such as cancer,
diabetes, and obesity related disease? There are many factors
which can contribute to obesity and we will discuss some of those
issues in this article.
A poor diet is one of the causes of obesity in America. When you
think of American food, immediately foods like pizza, hot dogs,
and fries come to mind. There are no fresh fruits and vegetables
to think of in this image. Women who are usually the people in
charge of meal planning and preparation in the home have opted
for fast to prepare foods filled with salt, carbs, and calories.
Fast food and easy to prepare meals are often easy and satisfy
quickly when on the run and fulfilling daily obligations to family.
A burger and fries from the back seat of the car is how most children
in the US are getting meals for breakfast, lunch, and even dinner.
School lunches often mimic fast food choices available in drive
throughs across America with chicken nuggets, pizza, and sodas
being high on the top of items desired on the menu. It has been
found that children who eat poorly become adults who eat poorly.
The habits obtained during childhood, especially eating patterns
and menu items of choice are a good indicator of future health
Physical activity is another issue. In order to lose weight, it
is recommended that 30-60 minutes of exercise be done a minimum
of 3 times per week. It is obvious based on the amount of weight
loss products that are on the market in America that weight loss
and weight loss aspirations are a hot topic. Go into any office
across the nation and you will find someone who is on a diet or
trying to lose weight. The biggest question probably is how many
succeed and maintain the weight loss. Weight loss is like a vapor
of air for some, it can be seen but is hard to grasp. One thing
which is comforting about the statistics is that Americans are
still trying to lose weight and have not given up and will continue
to purchase products and read books pertaining to different diet
regimens to achieve their goals.
The causes of obesity in America are more than these two issues
we have just discussed. Issues like socioeconomics and genetics
can also play a role in weight issues as well.
