Carbs and protein each has 4 calories per gram whereas fats has 9 calories per gram. Calories are vital and our body needs them on a daily basis to function properly because we need them for energy to perform our daily activities.

If you cut back on calories drastically, it's like you're starving yourself and your body will suffer ultimately with health issues. Consider the calories as "fuel" just like a car needs fuel to operate. Everyday we are burning calories when doing our daily activities and even when idle. Being idle and burning calories has a lot to do with how fast our metabolism works.

But the main question is are you losing weight while utilizing your calories? The answer is not necessarily because in order to lose weight, you need to burn excess calories which are stored in the form of fatty deposits. You will not lose weight simply by burning calories you consume everyday.

Picture this scenario for better understanding. Say your weight is 220 pounds and you're overweight by 20 pounds. These 20 pounds are stored as fats = excess calories, usually stored more prominently in the belly area. Now don't forget you need to eat everyday. Say you consume 2,000 calories per day in several meals and burn them all after, you're not going to lose weight automatically. Additional effort is required to get rid of those excess calories in the form of exercise. Eating fat-burning foods can also help. If not, those extra 20 pounds will still be there.

This is why you'll hear many fitness and weight loss experts often say "Burn more calories than you consume" in order to lose weight. It's the absolute truth. To illustrate this, let's use the above scenario with the 2,000 daily calorie intake. Now if you were to burn 2,500 calories per day and you consume 2,000, you will lose excess weight, of course not all in a single day but just a few pounds. It's a gradual process and you need to be patient. By utilizing 500 more calories from your body, you're actually making use of your fat stores for energy and when you do so, you're actually burning fat, hence weight loss is inevitable.

Having said all that, you should always pay attention to the kind of foods you're getting your calories from. Not all calories are created equal in terms of value. The calories you get from drinking soft drinks for instance are not the same as the calories you're getting from a freshly squeezed orange juice. The calories from the orange juice are more nutrient-dense and healthier too. Ingesting nutrient-dense calories will make your weight loss battle easier as such foods also have fat-burning properties, hence speeding the weight loss process.
