Does Eating Too Many Fruits Make You Fat?

Finding the perfect balance in your diet is not easy. Not everyone reacts the same way to all foods, and some people can eat thousands of calories every day while others just gain weight, even when they eat lightly. For some people, eating a lot of fruit may be the way to losing weight. However, for other people, eating too much fruit will only hamper your efforts and may cause you to gain more weight than you lose!

Fruits and Sugars

One reason why people think fruit is healthy is that fruit is much healthier than the junk food that most people snack on these days. If you want to eat a bag of chips, but someone offers you an apple or an orange, take the piece of fruit. There are fewer calories and your body will actually be able to use the calories in fruit, whereas the calories from the chips are so hard to digest that they are turned into fat instead.

However, fruit also contains a lot of sugars. The type of sugar that you get when you eat processed cookies or drink sodas is usually from corn or other cheap sugar substitutes. Those sugars are very hard for the body to use and end up making your blood sugar levels skyrocket and then drop way back down, making you crave even more sugar. The sugars in fruits are called fructose, and while they are better than corn syrup, they are still sources of a lot of energy.

The more energy you consume, the more energy you need to use if you want to stay healthy and slim. Fortunately, fruits also contain a lot of fiber, which helps to cleanse the waste products from your body. They also contain water, which is critical to maintaining good health and can help you to lose weight.

Too Much of a Good Thing is Still Too Much

While fruits are a better alternative to many of the snack foods or desserts that are available in stores today, if you overdo it, you'll just be binging on sugars. And always avoid canned fruits, which are usually canned in syrups that contain extra sugar. If you're going to eat fruit, you're probably doing the healthy thing. But eat fresh fruits and just have a few pieces of fruit a day, at the most. Too much fruit won't make you fat like eating junk food, but it won't help you to lose weight either.
