Is grapefruit good for weight loss?

The grapefruit is a citrus fruit well known for its numerous health benefits. It is rich in fiber and low in calories and hence, is a good choice when you want to lose the excess calories. The 'grapefruit diet' has been followed by many people since quite some time in the past. Because of its many effects on the body, it produces extraordinary results and one can lose up to 10 pounds of weight in just 12 days.

Listed below are some of the features of the grapefruit that help in losing excess weight:

· It has very high fiber content. This helps in lowering the blood cholesterol and keeping the glucose levels low.

· It has a low glycemic index, which means that the carbohydrates in the body are broken down slowly and hence, less sugar is released in the blood.

· They make us feel that the stomach is fuller and therefore, we do not binge on snacks in between meals.

The grapefruit diet is based on the fact that when they are eaten with proteins, they trigger weight loss. The diet consists of 12 days and if you wish to do it again, you have to give an interval of 2 days before starting it once again. The program is further enhanced if you drink lots of water and black coffee without sugar. The following is the meal plan for the same:

1. Breakfast - This consists of 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, a half grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice (without sugar) and black coffee.

2. Lunch - You should have a salad with any dressing, any meat of any quantity, ½ grape fruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice (without sugar).

3. Dinner - For dinner, you should have meat (preferably fish), red or green vegetables and grape fruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice (without sugar).

4. Bedtime snack - 8 ounces of milk.

The other benefit of grapefruit is that it reduces the level of insulin in the body. This also stimulates weight loss. The presence of high levels of insulin means that the sugar in the body is not being utilized to the optimum level and hence, converts into fat. You will also feel hungry more often and will have cravings to eat frequently. Grapefruit helps in maintaining a low level of insulin, thus using up more energy.
