Is tuna good for weight loss?

The diet plans which promote the inclusion of tuna fish in large quantities in one's food intake rely on the simple principle that for losing weight one has to consume lesser calories than their body can burn. It is a fact that the accumulation of the fat content in the body cells results from the inability of one's metabolism to burn those calories. Whatever the body cannot burn or use, gets stored in the form of fat, leading to weight gain and obesity.

However, if one consumes lesser calories than what their body can burn, it could lead to sudden weight loss, preventing the storage of extra calories in the form of fat. This is where the intake of tuna proves to be very helpful. It is believed that the 'three day tuna diet' plan helps in achieving a sudden weight loss, owing to the fact that the overall intake of carbohydrate calories is significantly lesser than the amount of calories generally needed for these three days. However, sole reliance on tuna as food intake is not a healthy or effective weight loss method in a long term perspective, as pointed out by experts.

There is considerable truth in the fact that inclusion of lean meats and fish like tuna in one's diet does help in weight loss and management, thanks to the low carbohydrate and high protein content, which prevents the storage of calories in the form of fat. However, going on a three day tuna diet is not a very healthy option, as it provides only short-term weight loss, which can be dangerous as one can put on more weight than what they lost in the time ahead. Also, one should not forget the danger of mercury poisoning in tuna fish, as the levels of mercury found in these is growing at an alarming pace, which is why it is advisable to restrict the daily intake quantity of tuna.
